Why Transitions Quietly Erode Self-Trust

The women I work with are often the most capable people in the room. They’ve built careers on being thoughtful, prepared, and highly reliable decision-makers. But transition changes the rules: A new role. A promotion. A career pivot. Returning after burnout. Stepping into leadership for the first time. 



All of these moments remove the familiar reference points that used to confirm, “I know what I’m doing here.” 



Suddenly: 


The expectations are less clear 


The feedback loops are slower 


The environment is unfamiliar 


The stakes feel higher 



Even small decisions can start to feel heavier than they used to. And that’s where doubt creeps in. Not loud, dramatic doubt — but subtle forms of hesitation: Re-reading an email three times before sending it. Asking for reassurance on a decision you’ve already thought through. Second-guessing your interpretation of a meeting. 



Sometimes, it's felt as a personal failure. But it’s actually a structural feature of transition. 


When the context shifts, your brain temporarily loses the predictive models it relied on to make quick, confident decisions. You’re no longer operating from practiced familiarity. You’re building new internal maps. And building new maps always involves uncertainty. 


This is where self-trust becomes critical. Without it, the instinct is to look outward for constant confirmation: “Am I doing this right?” “Do they approve?” “Did I read that correctly?” 



But leadership — especially in complex environments — eventually requires something else: The ability to hold uncertainty without abandoning your own judgment. Self-trust doesn’t eliminate doubt. It allows you to move forward with it. 



Because sometimes what feels like “self-doubt” is actually your body responding to pressure — not a signal that you’re incapable. And when you understand that difference, everything shifts...but that's the subject of the next post.
