Why Do I Suddenly Become Stupid in Interviews?

You know the material.

You've studied for weeks.

You've solved these problems before.

You may have even explained the concepts to someone else.

Then the interview starts.

The interviewer asks a question you know you've seen before, and suddenly your brain feels like it's running through mud.

You can't remember basic concepts.

You lose your train of thought.


You stumble through an answer that sounds far less intelligent than the one you practiced at home.

And when it's over, you think:


"What happened to me?"


Many people assume this means they weren't prepared enough.

Neuroscience suggests a different possibility.

You may not have forgotten the answer.

Your brain may have changed the problem.


Interviews Are Not Knowledge Tests


At least, not entirely.

Technical interviews are often framed as a way to measure knowledge and skill.

But when you look closely, they're asking your brain to do much more than recall information.


During a technical interview, you are simultaneously:

  • Retrieving information from memory

  • Holding information in working memory

  • Solving a novel problem

  • Explaining your reasoning

  • Monitoring the interviewer's reactions

  • Evaluating your own performance

  • Managing uncertainty

  • Regulating anxiety


That's a lot of cognitive traffic.

And your brain has limited bandwidth.

The challenge isn't simply knowing the answer.

The challenge is accessing what you know while someone watches and evaluates your performance.


The Brain's Attention Switchboard

One of the most fascinating discoveries in neuroscience over the past two decades is the identification of the salience network.


The salience network, which includes the anterior insula and anterior cingulate cortex, helps determine what deserves your attention. Researchers believe it plays a critical role in identifying important information and helping the brain shift between different cognitive networks.


Think of it as an air traffic controller.


Your brain constantly receives information from both the external world and your internal world.


External information:

  • The interviewer's facial expression

  • The question on the screen

  • The ticking clock


Internal information:

  • Your thoughts

  • Your emotions

  • Your physical sensations

  • Your predictions about what might happen next


The salience network helps determine which of these signals gets priority.

Most of the time, this system works beautifully.

But interviews introduce a unique challenge.


The Moment the Interview Becomes a Threat


Imagine you're solving a coding problem at home.

You get stuck.

You take a sip of coffee.

You think through it.

You eventually find a solution.

Now imagine solving that same problem while someone with the power to change your career is watching.

Suddenly, every pause feels meaningful.

Every mistake feels costly.

Every facial expression becomes data.

Your brain starts asking a different question:

"Am I safe?"

This is what researchers call social-evaluative threat—the experience of being judged, evaluated, or observed by others. Studies have shown that social threat can impair working memory performance and alter activity in brain regions involved in executive functioning and cognitive control.

In other words:

The interview itself can change the conditions under which thinking occurs.


Why Anxiety Makes Smart People Look Less Smart


One of the most consistent findings in cognitive neuroscience is that anxiety competes for attention.

When anxiety rises, the brain becomes more sensitive to threat-related information.

The problem is that threat-related information isn't always an actual threat.

Sometimes it's simply:

  • The interviewer's neutral expression

  • A moment of uncertainty

  • A difficult question

  • The thought that you're falling behind

Research suggests that anxiety can increase the tendency to prioritize threat-related information and pull cognitive resources away from task-focused thinking.

The result is a frustrating loop:

You're trying to solve the problem.

Then you start monitoring your performance.

Then you start monitoring the interviewer's reaction.

Then you start predicting failure.

Then you try to return to the problem.

Then you wonder if you're taking too long.

Then you try to return to the problem again.

This constant shifting creates additional cognitive load.

It feels like forgetting.

But it may actually be an attention-allocation problem.


The Real Challenge: Switching


This is where technical interviews become uniquely difficult.

Great problem solving requires mental flexibility.

You need to move between:

  • Memory retrieval

  • Pattern recognition

  • Strategic planning

  • Error detection

  • Communication

  • Adaptation

Neuroscientists sometimes describe this as coordination between large-scale brain networks involved in executive control, internal reflection, and attention. The salience network appears to play an important role in helping the brain determine where resources should go next.

When anxiety enters the picture, threat monitoring starts competing for those same resources.

The issue may not be that the knowledge disappeared.

The issue may be that your brain is repeatedly being pulled away from the task.


Why Mock Interviews Work


This leads to one of the biggest misconceptions about interview preparation.

Most people think preparation is about learning more information.

Sometimes it is.

But often the bigger goal is something else:

Creating a familiar cognitive environment.

When an experience is unfamiliar, the brain has to process both the task and the environment.

When an experience becomes familiar, the brain can devote more resources to the task itself.

This is why mock interviews are so powerful.

You're not just practicing answers.

You're practicing:

  • Being observed

  • Getting stuck

  • Recovering from mistakes

  • Thinking out loud

  • Managing uncertainty

  • Returning your attention to the problem

You're teaching your brain:

"I've been here before."

And that familiarity reduces the amount of attention consumed by threat monitoring.


Practice Recovery, Not Perfection


The best interviewers don't expect perfection.

The best candidates don't perform perfectly.

What separates strong performers is often their ability to recover.

They get stuck.

They pause.

They regroup.

They ask clarifying questions.

They return to the problem.

That skill can be trained.

Instead of asking:

"How do I stop being nervous?"

Try asking:

"How quickly can I return my attention to the problem when I get nervous?"

That's a much more realistic goal.

And it's much closer to how the brain actually works.


The Bottom Line


You probably didn't suddenly become stupid.

You were likely trying to solve two problems at once:

The technical problem in front of you.

And the brain's attempt to determine whether the situation was safe.

Understanding that distinction changes how we think about preparation.

The goal isn't simply to know more.

The goal is to create enough familiarity that your brain doesn't have to spend precious cognitive resources figuring out the environment.

Because when the environment feels familiar, the brain can focus on what you came to demonstrate in the first place:

Your actual ability.
